File Formats

Raw:
Advantages- complete data from camera sensors, higher in dynamic range, normally in proprietary format
Disadvantages- uncompressed, not as sharp

JPEG:
Advantages- standard format for any program, compressed files, sharper, suitable for printing
Disadvantages- lower in dynamic range, only 8 bits of color

Questions:

  1. RAW files retain all of the data, they just don't compress it
  2. Shooting in RAW allows the photographer to manipulate the contrast, exposer, brightness, highlights, colors, saturation, and shadows
  3. Some cameras don't have the ability to shoot in RAW, shooting in RAW takes up a lot of space per photo, photographers can convert RAW into JPEGs
  4. Photographers should take editing seriously and it consumes time to edit certain photos

  1. JPEG
  2. Raster formats can compress, data has characteristics for each pixel. Vector formats have geometric descriptions, must be rasterized to be displayed on digital monitors, can be displayed with CRT technology

.jpeg: Lossless, photos can be uploaded online, my camera can take photos in it
.tiff: Lossless, edit photos, unsure
.psd: Lossless, edit photos, unsure
.nef: Lossless, shot in RAW with Nikon, unsure
